Edited by Robert Parthesius and Jonathan Sharfman, the volume brings together perspectives on maritime and underwater cultural heritage in countries linked by the historic and Arabian maritime trade routes.
The chapters examine how approaches rooted in Western professional contexts have been adapted—or challenged—in Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Mozambique, Kenya, South Africa, Oman and India. Across the collection, distinctions between submerged and terrestrial, natural and cultural, and tangible and intangible heritage become less fixed.
The book asks what drives the development of national and regional approaches, whose heritage is being managed, and whether future practice can respond more closely to the people and contexts involved.
