Purpose
CIE works towards a more inclusive cultural world by challenging one-sided histories and creating space for voices that have often been overlooked. It supports fairer and more sustainable futures in which communities can tell their own stories and care for their own cultural places, practices and traditions.
CIE addresses past and ongoing injustices connected to colonialism, inequality and exclusion through education, research, digital and traditional storytelling and close collaboration with communities.

CIE organises its work through five connected clusters: Dhakira–Heritage Justice, HeritageLab, Heritage Ecology Journeys, Heritage Futures and Heritage EduHub. Programmes, projects, seminars, publications, learning resources and digital platforms connect these lines in practice.
Explore the programme structure ↗CIE’s income may include project and service income, grants, institutional partnerships, restricted and unrestricted donations, reimbursements and limited interest income. Funding is sought for defined public-benefit activities and organisational continuity.
Partners and funders ↗Funds are held in CIE’s bank account and used for its public-benefit purpose. The statutory board oversees financial management. Restricted donations are recorded separately and used for their designated purpose; general reserves support approved work and continuity.

The statutory board oversees CIE as a Dutch non-profit foundation and meets four times each year with the Board of Directors.

Remuneration policy
Members of CIE’s statutory board serve without remuneration. Reasonable and documented expenses incurred in carrying out board duties may be reimbursed.
Executive, programme, staff and specialist work is separate from statutory governance. Where paid work is agreed, compensation is documented in the relevant employment, service or project agreement and is proportionate to the role, responsibilities, available funding and applicable Dutch rules.
Current activity report
The report documents CIE’s work across HeritageLab, heritage justice, education, ecological and ocean heritage, publications, digital platforms, community collaborations, international partnerships and organisational development.
It also identifies CIE’s Board of Directors and team and contains the 2025 financial statement, including the balance sheet, statement of income and expenditure and explanatory notes.
